1 hour that could save you thousands!
It is very important that businesses regularly review their physical security plan. Times change, businesses change and managers and employees change and your physical security plan should reflect these changes. It is no good relying on a plan and products that were implemented years and years ago. Now is the time to reassess the physical security needs of your commercial property and here is a basic plan of how to do this.
Firstly you should carry out a review of all policies and products that are currently in place. Check to see what state they are in, if they need maintenance and how well you’re building has been protected by them so far. Check the pages of your incident book from the last few years and ascertain facts about any previous security problems or situations that occurred. You may find that there is a hot spot in your building or a particular product that is commonly targeted.
Get a couple of your colleagues to accompany you on walk around your premises. Take in every room, corridor, alley way, gate and fence and make notes on what measures are currently in place or any other noteworthy thing like holes in fences, a broken alarm system or broken locks.
The next step should be to talk to your employees and get their thoughts and feedback. At the end of the day they are the ones who use the building day in day out which means they will probably know what kinds of things need to be in place. Write down everything that is said when you talk to them and compare it with your previous research.
Next you need to analyse everything that you have done so far. You should be able to draw some fairly quick conclusions just by evaluating your notes. It is a good idea to make a list of problems in one column and then a list of the actions to be taken in the other.

Make sure that you specify a time by which you will accomplish these things. Set reminders in your calendar and review them a few weeks after implementation. It will probably take you about an hour to draft this plan but it will save you thousands of pounds by protecting your IT, tools or stock from thieves!
As in the list above you will probably find that you need to invest in some new security equipment such as security cages, security doors and roller shutters. If this is the case, maintain these things well and review your security plan on a regular basis!
